Blood Orange and Solerno Ice Pops
Ghiaccioli di arancia rossa e Solerno
I’m not done with blood oranges yet. No way, and I couldn’t resist this one. I know ice pops in the dead of winter might seem a bit much, but remember I am in Southern California, and we do not do winter. And the fact remains blood oranges are seasonal. So if an ice pop in March is too much for you, buy the blood oranges now, juice them and freeze the juice. In summer your family and guests will thank you.
These do not freeze “hard as ice.” I suggest wrapping the pops in plastic or food safe cellophane bags immediately after you’ve removed them from the molds and returning them to the freezer for about a half hour, or longer if you are not going to consume them straight away.
Blood Orange and Solerno Ice pops
makes about 10 ice pops, 2 ½ fluid ounces each
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
2 cups blood orange juice
1/4 cup Solerno blood orange liqueur*
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Make simple syrup:
Combine granulated sugar and water in small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, swirling pan occasionally to dissolve sugar. Boil 1 minute. Remove from heat and cool. Cover and chill.
Juice oranges and combine with ½ cup simple syrup, Solerno and lemon juice. Check for sweetness, adding more simple syrup if necessary. Pour into pop molds. Insert sticks, and freeze 24 hours.
To remove ice pops from molds, dip mold very briefly in hot water or dampen towels with hot water and wrap towels around individual mold compartments. Wrap in plastic or cellophane and return to freezer briefly to refreeze.

If you want alcohol-free pops, increase the amount of juice to 2 1/4 cups. No other adjustment is necessary.

Oh, now you’ve given me a great reason to go and buy more blood oranges and to stash some of the juice in the freezer. I love the way you styled the photo Adri. It could be in a food magazine!

Well, I even love ice cream in winter, so these are a natch for me. And, freezing the juice for summer is a great idea.

Hi Foodie,
I kept finding myself wanting to apologize for putting up ice cream, sorbetto and now the ice pops in winter. I am glad to hear that frozen desserts at this time of year are appealing to my readers. I hope you try these. Thanks for stopping by!

I often prefer fruit ices like this over ice cream, as I find them more refreshing. The addition on Solerno must make them extra special! I like your ice tray, Adri, and your idea to use a chalk board to name the recipe is very clever! Now I must find a nice chalk board so I can do the same in the future 🙂

Fruit ices are more refreshing – no doubt about it. About the chalkboard – I love it. I had one years ago, and I broke the slate. I looked forever for a replacement, but could not find one. Then my sister found this one at a second hand shop. This one stands up, like a sandwich board, and is double sided, the Cadillac of chalkboards! She gave it to me, and I remarked, “I’m going to get a lot of mileage out of this!”

Le arance rosse si trovano anche in Calabria in questo periodo, sono buonissime, i tuoi ghiaccioli sono molto invitanti, un ottimo dolce ricco di vitamine e povero di grassi!
