\nOh, how I waited on this one.\u00a0 Don’t confuse this with the classic cocktail, The Americano.\u00a0 No, I did not misspell anything.\u00a0 For four years I have followed the saga of Amanda Knox, the young American student jailed in Perugia, Italy for the November 2007 murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher.\u00a0 I followed Amanda through her original trial, her incarceration and appeal, and finally through this last most excruciating\u00a0weekend.\u00a0 I emailed with friends halfway across the globe.\u00a0 We agonized for Amanda, her co-defendant Rafaelle Sollecito and especially for the Kercher family.\u00a0 Lady Justice, as they say, grinds slowly, but she grinds finely, and she freed Amanda Knox.\u00a0 Even now, Amanda is most likely on her way back home.<\/del>\u00a0 Amanda’s home now.<\/p>\n

A letter to Amanda – Each time I saw you I was impressed by your youthful strength and backbone in the face of utmost adversity.\u00a0 For you I have created this celebratory cocktail based on citrus juices, club soda and liquors from the country you have now left behind.\u00a0 It starts with Solerno<\/a>, a sunny orange liqueur perfumed with the scent of orange blossoms.\u00a0 From today onward you can smell the blossoms yourself.\u00a0 Outside.\u00a0 Wherever you want.\u00a0 Whenever you please.\u00a0 The orange juice will remind you of that.\u00a0 The tart\u00a0 lemon juice and Aperol<\/a> will remind you of the bitter years in jail.\u00a0 A dash of club soda will lighten the mood.\u00a0 Finally I added a rock candy swizzle stick.\u00a0 Sweet freedom can be hard won.\u00a0 Congratulations, Amanda, and welcome home.\u00a0 We’re glad you are back.<\/p>\n

L’Americana<\/em><\/h4>\n
makes 1<\/h6>\n

1 ounce Solerno
\n2 ounces Aperol
\n2 ounces fresh orange juice
\n1\/2 ounce lemon juice
\ngenerous splash of club soda, OR to taste<\/p>\n

Fill a Highball glass 2\/3 full with ice.\u00a0 Add all ingredients, and stir.\u00a0 Garnish with a rock candy swizzle stick.<\/p>\n
