Tigerella Tomato

Another in the ongoing series – Exploring Tomatoes

Tigerella Tomato

This English heirloom was new to me last year, and it’s back again for 2011. That is good news for Miss Tigerella. What an amazing plant. I brought it home last year on the recommendation of the good folks at Tomatomania, and as always, they did not disappoint. This very vigorous grower produces bunches of red tomatoes with yellow stripes. With their moderate size, about 6 ounces, and firm texture, they are excellent slicers – and their tangy tomato flavor makes them perfect for use in salads, sandwiches and antipasti. Give this vigorous indeterminate 85 days, and she will reward you with a profusion of fruit all summer long. A note – another tomato is sometimes referred to as Tigerella – that is the very large bicolor heirloom, Mr. Stripey. Double check the name marker on your plant, and if in doubt, ask your nurseryman.

Ooooh, I’ve got to get me some seeds for next year! This year I grew three different yellow tomaotoes and Brandywine from seed with OK success (well, haven’t eaten any tomatoes yet, but the plants are busy). These look nice. Did you get the seeds online?

I am glad this one caught your eye. I simply could not believe how prolific it was last year. I did not grow it from seed. I purchased a seedling at our local Tomatomania plant show. Speaking of yellow and Brandywine, this year I purchased a Yellow Brandywine seedling at Tomatomania. Have you had any experience with the yellow version? I’ll let you know how it goes.
